Springfield, VA August 24, 2009 -- Here I am again today, working on a way distribute meaningful content, to a group of people entering into a world of organized chaos. A world called, the music industry.
Being one who has traveled the roads of lies and let downs, which you'll find running rapidly, throughout the music industry. I now find myself, trying to prepare others, with the equipment and preparation, that was not passed down to me.
I grew up in a family of musicians and singers, who never received their rightful place of recognition in the music industry. Even though, they were in the industry for 50 plus years. I thought 20 years was a bit much, but matching up to that, I still have 30 years to go. I have come to the conclusion, that I refuse to allow a multitude of others, that I come in contact with, to be blindsided, because someone else did not reveal the truth.
My music career has not been a bed of ease, but I can say that I am satisfied with what I have accomplished thus far.
To make a long story short, and get to the point. In 20 years, I have spent so much money, and so much time, constantly going to seminars, retreats and conferences, trying to make my dreams come true. I have rubbed shoulders with some of the best of the music industry practitioners.
However, I did not start to enjoy success, until I became somewhat introverted.
Let me start by saying that I give God all the glory, so as he led me.
I began to solely work my craft, being 100% self sufficient. This may not work for others, but it worked for me. I hit the road 30 to 40 weeks a year, and after every performance, I would return to my hotel room, log on to the internet, and touch base with my new fan base.
Creating alternative performances was my forte, because I did not get the calls, I could not get massive commercial radio airplay, but the internet stations enhance my listening audience dramatically.
Weblogs, Social Networks, video & audio podcasting, along with being able to set up On-line sales with CD baby, and a host of others & now iTunes has given me the boost that was needed, in order for me to succeed.
Learning the applications of Web 2.0, and how to apply them has given me a major artists advantage. Even though, it still does not give me the status quo recognition, it gives me the ability to reach the masses, therefore allowing me to have access to millions, even if, I only sell to 30,000 individuals a year on average. That's success to me, when you calculate the numbers, remember, I collect more from my individual sales, than the average popular artist. I own the record label, and I own the copyrights and the publishing to 90 compositions, they are my intellectual properties. And, I did not have to sell my soul.
This is what I have benefited from, by using technology. Now my ultimate goal is to pass it on, to as many people, who are willing to listen. Yes, you will still have to work hard and close the deals, but the fact of being able to get the attention of so many, is what you can celebrate. Don't let anyone fool you, this industry has always been about reaching the masses. That's the leveraged advantage, we now have access too. Don't let it slip through your fingers.
This is the new model of business marketing and promotions. If you have any talent that's distributed to 10 million people, there is no way they all will say, they don't like your style. As a matter of fact, many of them will grow to love you. I can vouch for that. And the haters you ask, oh, they'll still be there.
Now that I've come into the full knowledge of a few web 2.0 "POWER MOVES" I do not spend as much time on my computer anymore. These applications allow me to prepare blogs, and send them to all of my social networks with one mouse click.
Video uploads use to take several days, because I have so many accounts. Now I have access to an application, that allows me to send out to all of the video aggregators with one mouse click. And the beat goes on. Twitter, yes I still do, but it's now mobile, so that I can respond, even while I'm on the road. Finally, to all who has come to love and purchase my music, I say to all of you. Thank you so very much, because even with having technology, the production, arrangements, and delivery, still have to be good enough for you to buy it.
To all inspiring artists, writers, publishers and the likes, many will not support you, no matter how good you are. Some will even work hard to stop your dream in it's tracks. Remember, for every person that does not support you, two other people will. Take full advantage of the technology that's accessible to you, and reach millions, upon millions, they are waiting to hear from you.
We now have access to over Seven Hundred Million people..Worldwide...
Three Hundred Million people in the U.S. alone.
YOUR ACCESS HAS BEEN GRANTED!
My story is not the norm, but it's a living reality. Learn the business and blend it with technology, you cannot fail. Dream and dream big, until your dream comes through.
